Moose Jaw Skywatchers Gain More Aurora Chances as NOAA’s G1-to-G5 Storm Scale Guides Viewing

Longer, darker autumn nights around Moose Jaw are improving the odds of seeing the aurora borealis, with local astronomer Abigail Sadowski saying recent displays were visible even from Cypress Hills.
NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center is the main tool she recommends, especially its G scale, where geomagnetic storms run from G1 minor to G5 extreme and stronger storms push auroras farther south.
NOAA also posts aurora forecast maps and short-term updates that help viewers judge when conditions are favorable despite the lights’ unpredictability.
Dark locations away from city glow offer the best chance of a clear view north, though Sadowski said the strongest storms can light up the whole sky and remain visible from town.
