Gemini Reaches 1 Billion Users as ChatGPT’s Lead Narrows in AI Race

Google’s 1 billion monthly users for the Gemini app is a real milestone, and Android distribution is clearly a major reason. Gemini is being built into Android phones, Chrome, cars, watches and other Google surfaces, giving it a reach no rival can easily match. Google also says more than 100 million iOS users are active, so this is not only an Android story. That ecosystem advantage is helping Gemini gain share quickly. But “AI king” depends on what is being measured. OpenAI says ChatGPT passed 1 billion monthly users some time ago and hit 1 billion weekly users in July, though it has not provided a clean monthly-to-monthly comparison. Independent traffic data still shows ChatGPT ahead: Similarweb estimated about 53.9% of global AI assistant web visits in May 2026 versus roughly 27.9% for Gemini. Sensor Tower likewise said ChatGPT’s overall audience share fell below 50% for the first time, but remained the largest. What has changed is the balance of power. ChatGPT’s share is slipping, Gemini is rising fast, and Google’s control of Android, Search and Workspace gives it a built-in adoption machine. Still, scale alone does not settle the race. The next test is engagement, retention and revenue. On that measure, Google is closer than ever, but it has not clearly overtaken OpenAI yet.

Google said Gemini topped 1 billion monthly users last week, making it the company’s 14th product to cross that mark and its fastest-growing ever.
OpenAI disclosed days earlier that ChatGPT had also passed 1 billion users, after saying it reached 900 million weekly active users in February and 1 billion weekly users in July.
Those figures are not directly comparable, but they suggest ChatGPT remains the larger chatbot while Gemini is growing faster, after rising from 750 million monthly users in February to 950 million in late July.
Google’s count appears to cover the Gemini app itself, with more than 100 million active iOS users implying Android distribution is driving most of the rest.
The milestone underscores how ChatGPT’s once-dominant lead has faded as Google, Anthropic and Chinese rivals intensify the fight to keep users engaged and turn scale into revenue.
