Ignacio Espinal, 55, was arrested Tuesday in West New York, New Jersey, over the fatal stabbing of his wife Alyne Espinal, 46, in their Somerville home.
Alyne Espinal was found dead after a 911 welfare call just before 7:30 p.m. Thursday, with multiple lacerations to her chest, neck and thigh, and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Prosecutors charged Espinal with first-degree murder, third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and third-degree hindering.
The Somerset County Prosecutor's Office said the investigation remains preliminary and ongoing as detectives interview witnesses, review physical and electronic records, and analyze forensic evidence.
The killing occurred weeks after another high-profile New Jersey homicide in nearby Chester, but authorities said the cases are unrelated and moved far faster to identify a suspect in the Somerville death.
