Summary
44.17 seconds gave Matthew Hudson-Smith a third European 400m crown in Birmingham, where the 31-year-old won on his childhood track at Alexander Stadium.
The victory made him the joint-most decorated man in European Championships history with eight medals and lifted him to five golds, level with British greats Mo Farah and Roger Black.
Hudson-Smith had to attack from the outside lane after fading to second in his semi-final, but the fastest European this year opened enough daylight before the home straight to beat France's Muhammad Abdallah Kounta, second in 44.40.
Great Britain collected its third gold and sixth medal overall when Emily Newnham, 22, followed with 400m hurdles silver in a personal-best 53.33, behind Slovakia's Emma Zapletalova at 52.91.
The hosts now carry momentum into Thursday finals, with Amy Hunt and Dina Asher-Smith through in the women's 200m and Max Burgin, Ben Pattison and Elise Thorner also chasing medals.
