Summary
$466,000 in gold bars was nearly bought by a 69-year-old Hauppauge man before Suffolk County detectives intervened at a Centereach coin store on Aug. 12.
A computer pop-up led the man to call a number where scammers posing as federal agents claimed his accounts were vulnerable and told him to buy gold to protect them.
The victim had withdrawn money from his IRA retirement account, and a bank fraud investigator alerted police after spotting the unusually large withdrawal and wire to a gold dealer.
Suffolk police said the Financial Crimes Unit is investigating and asked potential scam victims or anyone with information to call 631-852-6821.
