Summary
Lillie Vehling, a Division I water polo player at UC Davis, pulled three girls to safety after spotting them struggling in Lake Washington during Seattle's Seafair on July 31.
Vehling told FOX 13 the girls were bobbing for air, and one was pushing the others under to breathe, prompting her to jump in and remove them one by one.
The third girl was tangled in a buoy rope and unconscious when Vehling reached her; she lifted the girl's head above water until she coughed up water and regained consciousness.
Seafair later honored Vehling at its gala, naming her Seafair royalty and giving her a chance to meet the Blue Angels she had come to watch.
The rescue comes as drowning remains the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 and the second-leading unintentional injury killer for ages 5 to 14, CDC data show.
