Summary
16.53 pounds of fentanyl powder worth $238,032 were found hidden beneath a 2024 Revoo electric moped at San Ysidro after the rider sought entry on Aug. 3.
CBP referred the moped to secondary inspection, where imaging flagged anomalies, a canine alerted officers, and a physical search uncovered seven packages of the drug.
A 22-year-old Mexican national was arrested and faces federal narcotics importation charges; officers also seized the moped, a GPS tracker and a cellphone.
San Ysidro Port Director Mariza Marin said smugglers are using increasingly inventive concealment methods, while officers rely on training, dogs and nonintrusive technology to stop them.
The seizure follows other Southern California border interceptions, including more than $300,000 in narcotics confiscated in one day in May at San Ysidro and Calexico East.
