iFixit Finds Galaxy Z Fold 8 Hinge Fails on 0.04mm Dust Despite IP48 Rating

Summary
iFixit’s teardown found Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 began grinding and would not open normally after hinge tests using 0.04mm UV powder and 0.16mm sand.
The result stems from the phone’s IP48 rating: the “4” covers only solid objects 1mm or larger, not fine dust, sand, powder or lint that can slip into the hinge.
iFixit said the test does not prove every Fold 8 will fail in a pocket, but it shows fine debris can reach a vulnerable hinge area; fleece-lined or brushed-fabric pockets pose the biggest practical risk.
The teardown gave the roughly $2,000 foldable a provisional repairability score of 4/10 because technicians must remove the inner display to access the hinge, risking damage to the thin OLED panel.
Samsung’s sealed sections kept batteries, boards and main electronics largely clean, iFixit said, but durability upgrades such as Armor FlexHinge and a titanium-reinforced structure still do not certify resistance to fine dust.
