Reporting around the St. Jude win noted no one can catch him for that BMW-end bonus. So the value of the lead is security, seeding into the final 30, and money — not a head start in the final tournament. That is the major trade-off in the PGA Tour’s revised system. It rewards season-long excellence up to East Lake, but once the Tour Championship begins, the FedExCup title becomes a straight 72-hole shootout. That is why the debate is so sharp around Scheffler in particular. He has been the season’s most consistent player by a wide margin, and under the old staggered-start system he would have carried a substantial advantage. Under the new model, his months of dominance mainly buy him access, certainty and bonus cash, but not protection against one hot week from any of the other 29 players.
