Google Messages Preps 6-Chat Pinned UI With Large Icons and Message Previews

Maybe, but there is no sign they are imminent, and some may never ship. What is visible today comes from APK teardowns and hidden beta screens inside Google Messages, not from a public rollout or a Google announcement. The strongest evidence is the new “Select chats to pin” screen, which has reportedly been launched manually on a rooted Pixel 7 Pro. That screen appears functional: it caps pinned chats at six, allows drag-and-drop reordering, and now includes search. Separate beta code also points to swipe actions for pin/unpin and block/unblock, plus the redesigned pinned row with circular avatars that turn into square message previews when new texts arrive. That said, hidden code is not the same as a launch plan. Google Messages is known for long beta cycles and A/B testing, and even features that look nearly finished can stay dormant for months or be dropped. Reporting around this redesign repeatedly notes that nothing in the app currently links users to the new pinning screen, and the destination for those six selected chats is still not fully confirmed in public builds. The most realistic expectation is that some version of this pinning redesign could reach stable release, because multiple related pieces now appear across recent betas and they fit together as a coherent UI change. But timing is unknown, and the swipe features and shape-shifting icons are still best understood as works in progress rather than features you should expect on your phone soon.

Google Messages is building a redesigned pinned-chats layout that shows up to six conversations as large contact icons, with new texts turning an icon into a square message preview.
The change appears in the messages.android_20260814_00_RC00.phone.openbeta_dynamic build and pairs with an earlier discovered cap that cuts pinned chats from 20 to six.
Users would still be able to reorder pinned conversations manually, and those placements would remain fixed instead of shifting when new messages arrive.
The teardown suggests the tighter six-chat limit is meant to keep the new visual layout manageable, but Google has not activated the feature or given a release timeline.
