Summary
A 10-year-old girl suffered three upper-leg lacerations after a beaver attacked her around 3:30 p.m. Thursday while she was swimming and wading with an organized group at Seneca Creek State Park.
Camp counselors pulled the animal off the girl before it escaped into the water, and Maryland officials closed the area near Berryville Road — including about 1 mile of trail and river access points — while wildlife teams search for it.
A separate canoeing group in the same area also reported a beaver trying to charge one of their boats, though no one was injured; other parts of the park, including the Lake Area off Clopper Road, remain open.
The incident is Maryland's third reported beaver attack in less than three weeks, after a 13-year-old swimmer was attacked July 26 and a 19-year-old fisherman was bitten Aug. 5 at Cunningham Falls State Park.
Those two Cunningham Falls beavers tested positive for rabies, but DNR said the Seneca Creek case is not considered related because the parks are more than 36 miles apart and health data show no rabies outbreak in either county.
