March 2028 is the target for Fast Forever, the 11th film billed as the franchise’s final chapter, as cast members used a 25th-anniversary event in Los Angeles to preview the movie and a TV expansion.
Four years of development and four writers went into the script, Vin Diesel said, adding that it made him cry and would leave audiences feeling strong emotion when they watch it.
Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster said they have not read the script but want the finale to return to the series’ roots—Los Angeles, street racing and community—rather than the globe-trotting excess of later films.
At least one Fast & Furious TV series is also in the works, with Brewster pitching a story around Mia and Brian’s children as the franchise tries to extend its legacy characters beyond the core cast.
The announcements came as Universal marked the 2001 original’s 25th anniversary with a theatrical rerelease and an L.A. celebration, following a warmly received Cannes midnight screening earlier this year.
