The main reason appears to be the film’s complicated development. *Fast Forever* was expected to move ahead soon after *Fast X*, but that plan was disrupted by delays, including the Hollywood strikes and broader production hurdles. Leterrier also pointed to the franchise’s budget as a major issue. Studios and producers are trying to align the scale and cost of the finale with today’s box-office realities, which has slowed progress. So while Vin Diesel has already praised Lesslie’s screenplay as “the best script I have read in decades,” Leterrier’s comments suggest the director has not yet read it because the film is still in a delicate development phase, with scheduling, budget, and production decisions not fully locked in.
