Two German soldiers’ remains were recovered in Budapest after exceptionally low Danube water exposed an 80-year-submerged riverbed near Batthyány Square on August 2.
Workers first pulled a DKW NZ 350-1 military motorcycle from the mud, then uncovered Tellermine 35 anti-tank mines, identification tags and other Wehrmacht items that led to a wider excavation.
Two intact dog tags—still clearly legible—could now identify the men, whose families apparently never received official notice of their deaths during the final battles for Budapest.
River mud mixed with gas oil helped preserve the metal evidence, and the soldiers are due to be buried at the German war cemetery in Budaörs after examination is completed.
