Summary
More than 50 coordinated arson and incendiary attacks struck Thailand's southern border provinces between 8 p.m. and midnight Saturday, hitting government sites, a convenience store, vehicles and telecom towers.
Two women were injured in a bomb blast in Muang district, Narathiwat, where most of the attacks were reported; other incidents hit neighboring Yala and Pattani.
Thai authorities said the attacks were aimed at creating unrest, imposed an overnight curfew in Narathiwat and warned residents not to touch suspicious objects; no further attacks were reported Sunday.
No group claimed responsibility, but the violence fits a long-running separatist insurgency in the Muslim-majority south that has killed more than 7,000 people since 2004.
The assault comes after July's checkpoint attack that killed five soldiers and delayed peace talks, and just before Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul's cabinet visits southern Songkhla next week.
