At least one major Republican statewide candidate in most swing states has questioned or denied Joe Biden’s 2020 win, putting election skeptics back on November ballots despite earlier voter rejections.
Those races matter because governors and secretaries of state certify results, oversee voting systems and can order probes or use their offices to cast doubt on outcomes.
Arizona’s Andy Biggs and Wisconsin’s Tom Tiffany voted against certifying 2020 results in Congress, while Michigan’s John James, Nevada’s Jim Marchant and Pennsylvania’s Stacy Garrity have all cast doubt on that election.
The concern reaches beyond 2026: winners would hold office in 2028, when critics fear they could resist certifying a Republican loss or face pressure from Donald Trump and his allies.
That risk echoes 2020, when Trump pressed swing-state governors and secretaries of state to withhold signatures and overturn his defeat, but those officials refused.
