That is an actual reduction, assuming the trade-in is accepted at the quoted value and the buyer already owned a qualifying phone. The rest of the “savings” came from Google Store credit, not cash back. The buyer received $200 in store credit from the preorder promotion and about $94 from Google One’s 10% credit perk. Those credits lower the effective cost only if the buyer was already planning to buy other items from the Google Store, such as accessories, a watch, or another device. They cannot be used like cash outside Google’s store and may expire or be subject to terms. That means the $159 figure is partly accounting math. It reflects the phone’s net cost after assigning full value to future store spending. For a loyal Google customer who will definitely use the credits, it is a fair effective price. For someone who would not otherwise buy more Google hardware, the real out-of-pocket cost was much closer to $399 plus tax, and the unused credits are not true savings. The biggest hidden cost is the traded-in phone itself. A $550 trade-in is not free money; it is value given up. So the deal is strong, but the headline price is not universal and can overstate the bargain.
