Susan Collins did not appear with Vice President JD Vance at his Brewer, Maine, event Monday, saying she was already scheduled elsewhere as she campaigns for re-election in a key 2026 Senate race.
The absence also underscored policy splits with the Trump administration: Collins said new 50% tariffs on Canadian goods are a mistake and rejected proposed USPS limits that could hinder Maine mail-in voting.
Vance's visit was his second in Maine this year and the second without Collins, though he has publicly praised her independence even while saying he sometimes wishes she were more partisan.
Maine is one of roughly a dozen Senate contests likely to decide the GOP's slim majority, and Collins is the only Republican senator seeking re-election in a state Kamala Harris carried in 2024.
