Pittsburgh Reports 1st Measles Case as Kindergarten MMR Coverage Sits at 93.8%

Allegheny County logged its first measles case of 2026 after an out-of-county infected person visited UPMC Children’s Hospital’s emergency department on Aug. 12 and Aug. 18.
Health officials are contacting exposed people and urging families not to delay MMR shots as the school year begins, saying no separate measles, mumps or rubella vaccines are available in the United States.
Kindergarten measles coverage in the county was 93.8% last school year, below the 95% herd-immunity threshold, while overall two-dose MMR coverage across all grades stood at 96.3%.
The kindergarten vaccination rate has slipped from 96.7% in 2020-21 to 93.8% in 2025-26, with religious schools posting the weakest coverage and only 31.4% reaching 95% full vaccination.
