Apple Unveils 2nm M6 Chip, Signaling iPhone 18 Pro Max Gains

Apple unexpectedly launched new Mac mini and Mac Studio models with its first 2nm M6 chip, offering the clearest official preview yet of what the iPhone 18 Pro Max’s A20 Pro may deliver.
The M6 shares the same chip-generation architecture as the expected A20 Pro, and Apple says the 2nm process brings higher transistor density plus a major leap in performance and power efficiency.
A new 12-core CPU gives the M6 up to 1.2 times the M5’s multi-threaded performance, while dual 16-core Neural Engines double peak AI compute versus the prior generation.
The A20 Pro will not match M6 specs directly because iPhones face tighter thermal, space and battery limits, but the same process gains could still lift speed, battery life and heat management.
With the iPhone 18 Pro launch expected next week, the M6 points to performance and efficiency as likely headline upgrades rather than a routine year-over-year refresh.
