Milwaukee police have recorded 72 homicides so far in 2026, down 25% from 96 a year earlier and below the 87 logged at the same point in 2024.
City officials attribute the turnaround to stronger coordination among violence-prevention groups, police and prosecutors after homicides had risen between 2024 and 2025 even as other violent crime fell.
Nationally, homicides are down about 17% through June and violent crime nearly 6%, extending an FBI-reported 18% murder decline and 9.3% overall crime drop in 2025.
Police Chief Jeffrey Norman said the main drivers in Milwaukee have not changed: disputes, retaliation and jealousy turning deadly when someone has a gun; about one-third of city homicides since 2020 fit that pattern.
Recent killings — including three deaths, a 16-year-old's killing and a double-fatal music studio shooting — show the decline remains fragile despite the improved year-to-date numbers.
