$10 million bought Google the winning bankruptcy bid for Spirit Airlines’ corporate data, including 100 million emails, 500 million Teams messages and roughly 30 million lines of code.
That trove could help train AI beyond coding by giving models real-world records of how office workers collaborate, make decisions and operate inside a company—data that is usually private.
Google beat Mercor’s $7.5 million offer, while a later $12.5 million bid from Micro1 arrived after the auction closed; Google said a third party would scrub personal information and exclude customer data.
Flight attendants’ union AFA has challenged the sale, arguing the dataset’s preserved links could let anonymized worker information be reconstructed; a judge is due to rule on added privacy protections on Sept. 9.
The fight underscores a broader AI push into white-collar automation, where firms are spending heavily on reinforcement-learning environments but still lack the rich corporate data that helped coding models advance quickly.
