Tom’s Hardware found Asus’ 480Hz frame-rate boost mode impressive but not meaningfully better when the system was already sustaining 240 fps. Broader testing and esports research show the same pattern: the leap from 60Hz to 144Hz is obvious, 240Hz is still valuable, but 360Hz to 480Hz brings sharply diminishing returns. One cited study found measurable gains above 60Hz, but no significant performance difference between 144Hz and 360Hz in target tasks. The tradeoff is substantial. On a 32-inch screen, dropping from 4K to 1080p means a major loss of sharpness and detail. For single-player games, mixed-use work, and most competitive players, 4K at 240Hz is likely the better overall experience, especially on an OLED this strong in color, contrast, and motion. So the 480Hz mode is not a gimmick, but it is a specialist tool. It makes sense for top-tier esports players in lightweight shooters with extremely high, stable frame rates. For everyone else, 4K/240Hz is the more tangible upgrade.
