Summary
State Sen. Bryan Avila joined Byron Donalds’ Florida gubernatorial ticket Tuesday, giving the GOP nominee a Miami-Dade running mate ahead of the November general election.
Avila, who represents District 39 covering Hialeah, Hialeah Gardens and Miami Lakes, had already spent months in Donalds’ orbit as a co-chair of Veterans for Byron and a participant in Latinos for Byron.
Donalds announced the pick at Miami’s Freedom Tower after winning the Republican primary to succeed term-limited Gov. Ron DeSantis.
November’s race will pit Donalds against Democrat David Jolly, a former Republican; if elected, Donalds would become Florida’s first Black governor.
