Five years after the Abbey Gate bombing, Fox Nation released a 40-minute documentary examining the 2021 Kabul airport attack and the mistakes it says led to the suicide blast.
Tyler Vargas-Andrews, a retired Marine sergeant who lost both legs, recounts taking 150 ball bearings, losing a kidney and suffering massive abdominal injuries; retired Marine Cpl. Kelsee Lainhart also describes lasting shrapnel wounds.
The attack killed 13 U.S. service members—11 Marines, one sailor and one soldier—wounded 45 Americans and left more than 160 Afghan civilians dead.
The film also follows injured troops' lives after the bombing and frames the attack as a lasting wound on the post-9/11 military generation.
Rep. Matt Van Epps, a former Army aviator, used the anniversary to condemn the Biden administration's Afghanistan withdrawal and introduced a resolution marking the fifth year since the bombing.
