Cindy Brunson called Caitlin Clark’s latest milestone — her fifth career 30-point, 10-assist game — a "small sample size," even though the total exceeds the other four such games in WNBA history combined.
That criticism followed Clark’s 37-point, 10-assist outing in a 113-90 win over Chicago, which Brunson had also downplayed as stat-padding because Indiana led by 20 late.
Brunson’s comments drew added scrutiny because she praised Paige Bueckers’ 22-point, 11-assist game in a 96-78 Dallas win and celebrated Angel Reese’s 26-rebound record without applying the same blowout or competition caveats.
The latest flare-up comes after Brunson backed DiJonai Carrington in the Sophie Cunningham incident, saying she was "Team DiJonai" and arguing the play merited only a Flagrant 1.
The dispute has widened a broader WNBA debate over race, favoritism and media credibility, with Brunson deleting one Threads post after saying the backlash included racist and transphobic comments.
