Clarence Thomas said Samuel Alito once explained their lack of friendship at Yale Law School by telling him, “You were scary,” in a podcast interview aired Wednesday.
Thomas said Alito attended Yale 1 year behind him, and that when he later asked why they were not friends despite overlapping for 2 years, Alito gave that blunt answer.
Thomas joked that his law-school look — bib overalls and combat boots — may have fed that impression, adding he was glad smartphones were not around to capture it.
The anecdote came in a rare interview with Sen. Ted Cruz on “Verdict,” where the conversation ranged beyond the court to Thomas’s race, politics and ideological shift from his college years.
