Summary
São Paulo will host OpenAI’s new Brazil commercial team, which will work with businesses, developers, researchers and public institutions as the company deepens its local presence.
Brazil drove the move with surging usage: it is one of ChatGPT’s three biggest markets by weekly active users, local users have nearly doubled in a year, and 35% of individual messages in June were work-related.
Developer and enterprise demand is also accelerating — Brazil ranks second globally by developers using the OpenAI API, weekly Codex users are up more than 11-fold in 2026, and ChatGPT Enterprise seats have grown fivefold year over year.
OpenAI tied the expansion to new partnerships, including ChatGPT Edu access at ITA, research support for IMPA and HCFMUSP, AI literacy training with ENTER, small-business training with Estímulo, and an AI services MOU with São Paulo.
A RegLab study funded by OpenAI estimates AI could add nearly R$1 trillion to Brazil’s economy by 2030, framing the launch as a long-term bet on turning adoption into broader economic growth.
