No. Bigger budgets now shape the Heisman race more than ever, but they do not guarantee it, and player development still matters. The evidence from 2026 points to a sport where money buys access to elite quarterbacks, receivers and linemen. Multiple reports put top rosters in the $40 million to $50 million range, with schools such as LSU, Miami, Texas, Notre Dame and Ohio State spending heavily. Quarterbacks alone can command $3 million to $5 million, with rare cases even higher. That spending helps create the conditions for a Heisman campaign: national exposure, strong supporting casts and playoff relevance. But the award is still not simply won by the highest bidder. Recent examples cut against that idea. Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza reportedly was not the top-paid option in his portal cycle, yet he won the Heisman and a national title because he found the right system, coaching and opportunity. That supports On3’s prediction that this year’s winner could again be a transfer or a quarterback who was not a full-time Power 4 starter last season. In other words, development and fit remain decisive. The modern Heisman formula is less “richest player wins” than “best-developed player on a well-funded contender wins.” NIL and the portal make it easier for wealthy programs to assemble finalists, but coaching, scheme, health and timing still separate contenders from winners. Money can buy the stage. It still cannot fully script the performance.
