California Eid Bill Clears Assembly 64-1, Nearing Newsom's Desk

AB 2017 would formally recognize Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha in California law, and it needs Senate approval by Monday to reach Gov. Gavin Newsom.
The measure would let state employees use existing paid holiday credits for Eid, while public schools and community colleges could close in observance of the two holidays.
Matt Haney and Muslim advocacy groups say the bill would spare workers and students from choosing between religious observance and school or job obligations, framing it as equal treatment for Muslim Californians.
The California Family Council backs excused absences for religious holidays but opposes provisions allowing schools to celebrate Eid's meaning and the state to draft related curriculum guidance.
If enacted, Eid would join California-recognized holidays such as Lunar New Year and Diwali; supporters say the proposal goes beyond Washington state's law by offering paid, not unpaid, time off.
