The 16,900-pound World Trade Center steel beam is traveling across the country as part of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation’s “Steel Across America” tour to mark the 25th anniversary of 9/11 and ensure the victims and first responders are not forgotten. The beam, recovered from the South Tower, is serving as a traveling memorial. Tunnel to Towers is bringing it to more than 35 stops in 21 states and Washington, D.C., giving people far from New York a chance to see a physical piece of 9/11 history, reflect on the attacks, and honor the 2,977 people killed, including the 343 FDNY firefighters who died responding. The tour is also tied directly to the legacy of FDNY firefighter Stephen Siller, whose death inspired the foundation. After finishing his shift on Sept. 11, 2001, Siller turned back, strapped on his gear, and ran through the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel to the World Trade Center, where he was killed. Foundation chairman Frank Siller, his brother, has said the effort is meant to carry Stephen’s mission of “doing good” and keep his sacrifice “Never Forgotten.” At each stop, the foundation has organized remembrance ceremonies with firefighters, veterans, color guards, bagpipes, blessings and moments of silence. The final leg of the beam’s journey is scheduled to return to New York, where it will pass through the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel on Sept. 11, retracing Stephen Siller’s final route as part of the 25th-anniversary commemoration.

Frank Siller on Sept. 1 released “Let Us Do Good,” a memoir that recounts learning his brother Stephen Siller would not return from Ground Zero and frames that loss as the foundation of his later mission.
Stephen Siller, an FDNY firefighter, had finished his shift but turned back to his firehouse on Sept. 11, 2001; Frank writes that his brother’s death left behind a wife and 5 children and reshaped the family’s life.
The book, published ahead of the 25th anniversary of the attacks, draws its title from the Franciscan phrase “while we have time, let us do good,” which Frank says guided both Stephen’s life and the family’s response.
That response became the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which Frank says was created on Sept. 12 to honor Stephen and other 9/11 victims by serving America’s heroes and their families.
