Summary
Polk County deputies arrested Axel Antonio Espinal Herrera, 24, after a 4 a.m. break-in and alleged sexual assault on a 77-year-old woman in her home.
Detectives found Herrera in a nearby house, saying he matched the victim’s description, had scratches consistent with her account, and was linked to clothing recovered there.
Herrera was charged with kidnapping, sexual battery by force, burglary and battery, tampering with evidence, cocaine possession, drug paraphernalia possession, and loitering and prowling.
Florida authorities said his immigration status elevates each charge by one category, exposing him to multiple life sentences if convicted; ICE placed a detainer on him.
Two other Honduran immigrants found in the same house were also taken into custody on ICE holds as Sheriff Grady Judd condemned the attack as exceptionally violent.
