Summary
A UN readout of António Guterres's Tuesday meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian omitted any mention of protesters, executions or torture allegations, saying only that he discussed the conflict's humanitarian and economic fallout.
Asked whether Guterres raised those issues directly, spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said he had "nothing to add" to the readout, while saying the secretary-general had addressed executions with other senior Iranian officials in separate meetings.
HRANA said Iran carried out 78 executions in August, including two tied to January's protests, and courts issued 21 death sentences that month, including against 10 defendants in an Isfahan protest case.
The crackdown has extended beyond executions: rights groups say more than 60,000 people were detained after the January demonstrations, while 13 detainees were recently sentenced to a combined 24 years and also received lashes and exile penalties.
France, which took the UN Security Council presidency for September, said Iran's nuclear file will be the council's main focus this month, but its discussions will not occur "in a vacuum" from mass repression allegations.
