The Moon-Venus pairing on September 13 and 14 is a must-see because it combines rarity, beauty and a strong teaching value in one easy-to-observe event. Shortly after sunset, a thin crescent Moon will appear close to Venus low in the western sky, a striking naked-eye sight on its own. What makes this pairing stand out for amateur astronomers is that both objects will show crescent phases in a telescope. That side-by-side comparison is unusual and visually dramatic: the Moon will be a slender waxing crescent, while Venus, nearing its October passage between Earth and the Sun, will also appear as a bright crescent. That gives observers a clear demonstration of planetary phases, showing that Venus, like the Moon, shines by reflected sunlight. Astronomy guides for this month note that Venus will be much more illuminated than the young Moon on those evenings, making the contrast especially instructive for beginners, families and public stargazing events. Timing also adds urgency. Venus is still brilliant in early September but is sinking rapidly into the Sun’s glare and will soon disappear from the evening sky before returning to the dawn sky in mid-October. Escambia Amateur Astronomers said its September public observing season will include Casino Beach events on Sept. 18-19 and Big Lagoon State Park viewing on Sept. 15, with October dates also scheduled.
The club is timing the sessions around key sky events, including the Sept. 10 new moon, the Sept. 18 first quarter, the Sept. 22 autumnal equinox and the Sept. 26 Harvest Moon.
Venus, Mars and Saturn headline the month’s observing targets: Venus appears as a crescent in twilight, Mars stays in the morning sky, and Saturn nears early-October opposition with more open rings.
Big Lagoon sessions carry the park’s $6 entry fee, while Casino Beach parking is free; the group also pointed visitors to a Sept. 4 planetarium show at Pensacola State costing $6 for adults and $5 for students.
The announcement doubles as a September sky guide for Northwest Florida, highlighting seasonal constellations and the still-anticipated return of T Coronae Borealis, last seen erupting in 1946.
