A 2024 study identified 254 genes associated with at least one Big Five personality trait, adding genetic detail to evidence that personality is partly inherited rather than fixed by a single gene.
Twin studies and a 2015 Meta-analysis of more than 100,000 people put personality heritability around 40% to 60%, meaning genes explain part of the variation between people, not a set share of any one person’s character.
Environmental influences still account for much of the rest, but researchers say most non-genetic factors have small, cumulative effects except in extreme cases such as abuse, trauma or severe deprivation.
The Big Five model—openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism—remains the main research framework, and scientists say personality can still change over time through life experience or therapy.
