The Hall will shrink its main selection committee from 50 members to 28, including three non-voting alternates, in its biggest rules overhaul after Bill Belichick was left out of the 2026 class.
The changes also scrap formal candidate presentations: a non-selector will now read each nominee's name and resume before immediate discussion, a move the Hall says is meant to reduce unintended bias and the sway of stronger speakers.
Three categories will remain—player, coach and contributor—while the split between modern-era and senior players ends, putting all non-inducted players into one pool.
Two 11-member subcommittees will screen coach and contributor candidates, and the full panel is expected to review 13 players, one coach and one contributor each year.
Annual classes will range from three to seven inductees, likely five or six most years, with the reworked committee set to meet in person in early February 2027.
