An Egyptian court confirmed death sentences for TV presenter Sarah Khalifa and 11 co-defendants after obtaining the grand mufti’s opinion, a legal step required before capital punishment can be finalized.
Prosecutors said the group imported ingredients used to make narcotics for sale and possessed illegal firearms and munitions; the court heard authorities seized more than 750kg of drugs and precursor materials.
Khalifa, 39, denied the charges, telling the court she had never seen drugs until she was photographed with them at anti-narcotics offices, and her lawyer said she will appeal.
Nine other defendants received life sentences and seven were acquitted, with the case relying on testimony from 20 witnesses as well as electronic evidence including conversations and video clips.
The ruling adds to scrutiny of Egypt’s use of capital punishment: Amnesty said courts issued 492 death sentences in 2025, including for crimes such as drug trafficking that fall short of intentional killing under international standards.
