It can boost productivity, but only in narrow, practical ways, and the current bug makes it easier to see as clutter for some users. The useful part is clear: Google’s new Gemini overlay on Android removes steps. Instead of reopening the app and side panel, users can minimize an active query into a floating bubble, switch apps, and return with one tap. That is genuinely helpful for quick reference tasks such as checking a summary, waiting for a response while reading, or keeping a drafting conversation available in the background. The ability to tap outside the sheet to collapse it back into a bubble also reduces interruption. But the feature has limits that affect whether it feels productive. The bubble only supports six preset positions, and a reported bug sends it back to the bottom-right corner after each minimization. That undermines one of the main benefits of floating tools: staying where the user put them. If the bubble repeatedly covers controls or content, it stops feeling like a shortcut and starts feeling like visual noise. So the value depends on the user and the task. For people who already use Gemini as a live assistant while moving between apps, this is a meaningful reduction in friction. For users who prefer a clean screen, or who only occasionally query AI, the floating bubble may add little beyond another persistent overlay. In its current form, it is more useful than gimmicky, but not polished enough to avoid becoming digital clutter in everyday use.

Google is widely rolling out a new Minimize button for the Gemini overlay on Android that collapses the assistant into a floating bubble for faster multitasking.
The bubble lets users reopen Gemini while using other apps, and it can also appear after a response loads by tapping outside the overlay sheet.
The shortcut is quicker than reopening the Gemini app and side panel, and it also lets users ask a question, minimize, and continue other tasks while waiting for an answer.
The current version has limits: the bubble snaps to 1 of 6 fixed positions instead of moving freely, and a bug appears to reset it to the bottom-right corner after each minimization.
Users wanting a fuller floating experience can alternatively use Android 17's system Bubble option with the Gemini app.
