Conference officials said the Big Ten’s Hawkeye timing system—not the stadium clock—showed 1 second left before Michigan’s final play in its 13-12 win over Western Michigan.
A replay review found Broncos safety Micah Davis touched the ball while jumping from an established out-of-bounds position, stopping the clock with 1 second remaining and giving Michigan one more snap.
That extra play produced a 47-yard Bryce Underwood heave to J.J. Buchanan for the winning touchdown after time had appeared to expire in Kyle Whittingham’s Michigan debut.
Kyle Whittingham and Purdue coach Barry Odom said they did not know the visible stadium clock could differ from the official clock, but both said the ruling appeared correct after the explanation.
Western Michigan and the MAC accepted the decision, though school president Russ Kavalhuna said the league should better sync what viewers see with the timing data officials use.
