$6 million in ads now backs the Protect College Sports Act after Saving College Sports expanded its buy from $5 million and added Colorado coach Deion Sanders to a new national spot.
Sanders' ad will run during major college football broadcasts this weekend, arguing the bill would aid student athletes, bolster historically Black colleges and universities, and protect men's and women's sports.
The push lands as the Senate returns next week with the Cruz-Cantwell measure on the calendar after the Big Ten and SEC endorsed it, but supporters failed to secure a floor vote before August recess.
Opposition remains bipartisan: Sens. Cory Booker and Chris Murphy have been whipping Democratic votes against it, Republican Tommy Tuberville is skeptical, and the Congressional Black Caucus has also criticized the bill.
House prospects are shakier still, with Majority Leader Steve Scalise saying the package would need to address athlete employment status before his chamber takes it up.
