Apple Set to Unveil watchOS 27 and Series 12 at Sept. 9 Event

Q: Will your Apple Watch actually get the massive Siri AI upgrade, or is your hardware secretly being left behind?

Only some Apple Watches will get the new Siri AI experience, and many recent models are being left out. Apple says watchOS 27 supports only the Apple Watch Series 9 and later, Apple Watch Ultra 2 and later, and Apple Watch SE 3. That means the Series 6, 7, 8, the original Ultra, and the SE 2 do not get watchOS 27 at all, so they also miss the new Siri app, the redesigned navigation, and the other headline features. Even if your watch is supported, the full Siri AI upgrade has another requirement: it must be paired with an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence, which means an iPhone 15 Pro or later. Without that paired iPhone, you may get watchOS 27 itself, but not the full AI-powered Siri experience Apple is promoting. Apple’s rationale is performance. Company executives told TechRadar that Siri AI and features such as the new tap gesture “work best” on the processing power of Series 9-and-newer hardware. Reporting around the S9 chip suggests that jump in performance is a key reason Apple drew the line there. So the practical answer is simple: if you own a Series 9, Series 10, Series 11, Ultra 2, Ultra 3, or SE 3, and you pair it with an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone, you should get the major Siri AI upgrade. If you have anything older, your watch is effectively being left behind for new features, though Apple says those devices can still pair with newer iPhones and continue receiving security updates.
