By doing part of that indexing work in advance, Apple is trying to avoid forcing millions of iPhones to rebuild everything at once after the upgrade. The problem appears to have shown up in early iOS 27 beta testing. Developers reported unusually long indexing times, in some cases stretching to a week or more. During that period, devices could show “optimizing search and Siri,” and users might notice heavier battery use, slower performance, or incomplete search results while indexing finished. So Apple’s advice to install iOS 26.6 is less about adding a visible feature now and more about quietly reducing friction later: fewer Spotlight delays, a smoother Siri transition, and less chance that the new AI features feel broken or sluggish immediately after updating to iOS 27. It also brings routine bug fixes and security updates, which further lowers the risk of upgrade issues.
