Georgia's planned execution of 53-year-old Stacey Humphreys was halted late Tuesday, leaving Texas to execute LeJames Norman on Wednesday and Alabama to execute Jeffery Lee on Thursday.
The three cases had been lined up within a 24-hour span across three states — a rare clustering that the Death Penalty Information Center said appears coincidental rather than coordinated.
Norman, 40, was sentenced for a 2005 triple murder during a robbery, while Lee, 50, is set to die for a 1998 double murder in a pawn shop holdup.
September has 7 executions scheduled nationwide; 25 have been carried out in 2026 so far, with 14 more still on the calendar subject to court stays.
The broader surge follows an unusually active period in capital punishment, with Florida driving much of the recent increase after accounting for 15 of this year's U.S. executions.
