Prosecutors argued Walsh posed an ongoing threat beyond the death of her 2-year-old son, Barrett, alleging she threatened to kill her husband and the couple's three surviving children after her arrest.
Three first-degree murder counts stem from allegations that Walsh killed Barrett while believing the toddler was the devil; she has not entered a plea and the case remains pending.
Northwestern forensic psychiatrist Stephen Dinwiddie said dangerousness is a forward-looking assessment tied to current mental condition, not a permanent label, and treatment can materially change how future risk is judged.
Under Illinois law, that means a detention ruling can be revisited if circumstances change, though any pretrial release decision would still rest with the court.
