Greece Charges 2 After 82-Year-Old Dies in Beach Brawl Over 6 Sunbeds

An 82-year-old man died after a Sept. 20 fight over six sunbeds at Vouliagmeni beach near Athens, with a 76-year-old man charged with causing fatal bodily harm and a 21-year-old woman also charged.
Witnesses told local media the dispute began when the older man tried to reserve loungers for arriving friends, then turned physical after he allegedly struck the woman, prompting the 76-year-old and others to retaliate.
Cardiac arrest struck the 82-year-old during the confrontation; bystanders and a nurse performed CPR and used a defibrillator, but he was pronounced dead shortly after 11 a.m. at Asklepieion Hospital in Voula.
Police also questioned the beach resort manager, ordered a postmortem and scheduled the two suspects to testify before a judge on Sept. 23.
Vouliagmeni can draw 7,000 to 8,000 visitors a day, and the killing lands amid wider Greek tensions over crowded beaches and a government crackdown on illegal sunbed monopolies.
