Q: With a title shot looming, is this extreme animosity genuine hatred or a brilliantly calculated theatrical plot to secure championship gold?

It is probably both: a real personal feud amplified by smart self-promotion at exactly the right moment in the title race. The evidence for genuine hostility is unusually strong. Perez and Dumont have traded conflicting accusations for years over declined fight offers, disrespect, and a confrontation at the UFC Performance Institute that Perez says nearly turned physical. Dumont has publicly called the issue “personal,” said she wants to hurt Perez, and even suggested the dislike will remain after the fight. Their weigh-in faceoff, where Dumont threw condoms and money at Perez, looked less like standard scripted trash talk and more like a rivalry that has spilled well beyond routine promotion. At the same time, Perez has openly admitted she is using the feud to sell the fight. She has said “everything needs to go viral” and argued she is doing “double the work” to build attention in a division where fighters often stay quiet. That is not accidental. Perez knows she is on a six-fight UFC winning streak, knows Dumont is ranked above her, and knows the Kayla Harrison-Amanda Nunes title fight could create a vacancy for the next clear contender. So the animosity appears authentic, but the publicity around it is clearly calculated. In UFC terms, that is a powerful combination: real bad blood, deliberately packaged. If Perez wins, especially emphatically, the feud will have done more than entertain—it may have helped turn a contender into the unavoidable next title challenger.

Saturday’s UFC Vegas 121 co-main event gives Ailin Perez a chance to settle a long-running feud with Norma Dumont, and Perez says she expects to stop the Brazilian rather than win on points.
Perez says the edge is mental as much as tactical, claiming years of trash talk have already gotten to Dumont and calling her opponent’s biggest weakness her mind, not her grappling.
The matchup carries a durability test: Dumont has gone the distance in 11 straight fights since a 2020 first-round knockout loss, while Perez enters on a six-fight winning streak and says her striking is sharper after shoulder surgery.
A win over Dumont would also strengthen Perez’s push for the next bantamweight title opportunity after Kayla Harrison faces Amanda Nunes at UFC 334 on Nov. 14.
