Summary
Andy Burnham said the UK has “strong indications” Iran was involved in the weekend RAF Fairford incident, while stressing the counter-terror investigation remains active and serious.
Five UK men aged 23 to 25 were arrested after police were alerted to three suspicious vehicles near the base, then released under what Burnham called the strictest possible bail conditions.
Police found petrol in the vans but no explosive devices, and one of the suspects had called 999 before the arrests.
The case has drawn US scrutiny after Donald Trump questioned the bail decision and Marco Rubio said the incident clearly pointed to a foreign actor.
RAF Fairford has recently been used by US bombers for strikes linked to Iran; Tehran had warned such bases could be legitimate targets and now denies any role.
