Red Sox Pull Sonny Gray After 2 Yankees Singles Put Runner in Scoring Position

Q: Did Boston make the right call pulling Sonny Gray in an elimination game, or did matchup strategy override a possible redemption moment?

Boston likely made the right call, even if it denied Gray a compelling personal moment. In an elimination game, the priority is run expectancy, not narrative. Gray had been good overall, but the game state had changed: he had already allowed Garcia’s homer, then gave up consecutive two-out singles to Trent Grisham and Ben Rice. That put the tying or insurance rally in motion and brought up Cody Bellinger, a left-handed hitter. Going to left-hander Erik Miller was a conventional leverage move based on matchup and bullpen freshness. The decision also fits how Boston approached the series. After preserving top relievers in Game 1, the Red Sox had their better bullpen options available and were clearly prepared to manage Game 2 aggressively. With Gray at 36, and Boston needing every out, asking him to finish the inning against a dangerous lefty after traffic had built was a bigger risk than turning to a specialist. That said, it is fair to argue the move was not automatic. Gray had been one of Boston’s most reliable pitchers all year, going 18-5 with a 2.72 ERA, and he had pitched well against the Yankees during the season. He also has generally handled Yankee Stadium better since leaving New York. Given that track record, leaving him in for Bellinger would not have been reckless. Still, playoff managing is usually about percentages over symbolism. Boston chose the matchup, and in that spot, that was a defensible decision even if it overrode a possible redemption moment for Gray.

Q: Was the real story Boston’s hook for Gray, or the bigger warning signs from its slumping offense and thin playoff roster?

The bigger warning signs were Boston’s offense and roster fragility, not the hook for Sonny Gray. The pitching move was defensible. Gray had been good again in a season-defining spot, and with two outs and two runners on, going to left-hander Erik Miller to face Cody Bellinger matched Boston’s late-game, matchup-heavy bullpen plan. Given Gray’s workload, the Yankees’ left-handed lineup, and Boston’s need to survive every leverage pocket, the decision was aggressive but not obviously misguided. The broader problem is that Boston gave itself almost no margin for error. The Red Sox scored a major league-low 71 runs in September, managed only three hits in the 9-0 Game 1 loss, and had been in a prolonged offensive slide entering the series. Cam Schlittler’s dominance in the opener exposed that weakness again, and Boston was already facing Max Fried next. That is a much more troubling indicator than one pitching change. The roster context makes it worse. Roman Anthony’s wrist/hand setback left Boston without one of its few impact bats, and removing him from the Wild Card roster thinned an already compromised lineup. The club also carried a lefty-heavy pitching staff because of injuries, limiting flexibility and putting extra pressure on depth pieces. Gray’s exit may have been the moment, but the real story was structural: a cold offense, fewer healthy difference-makers, and a roster that looked too thin for a short postseason series against a deeper Yankees team.
