Kratom Group Says 2 Ole Miss Deaths Involved Synthetic Opioids, Not Natural Kratom

Summary
Two Ole Miss students found dead Sept. 21 were linked by investigators only to "packaging associated with kratom-related products," not confirmed natural kratom, the American Kratom Association said after earlier reports described packaged or synthetic kratom.
Court documents say packaging near both students carried the Modus name, and one pack was labeled Smax Pseudo-DHM with pseudoindoxyl and MGM-15(DHM) listed among the ingredients.
Toxicology results are still pending, but the association argues the products were chemically manipulated opioids already controlled under federal law and should not be classified as kratom.
The group is pressing for stronger enforcement of Mississippi's kratom law and for regulation focused on testing, labeling and age limits, while the FDA continues to warn that kratom has no approved medical use and carries safety risks.
