Google's Fitbit Edge Leak Shows 7-Day Battery as New Tracker Targets $149-$199 Slot

Q: What hidden health capabilities are packed into the Fitbit Edge's mysterious metal side strips?

The most likely hidden health feature in the Fitbit Edge’s metal side strips is ECG capability. Multiple leak reports describe the strips on the left and right sides as contact points similar to those used on other Fitbit devices for electrocardiogram readings. In practice, that would let users place fingers on the metal contacts to complete a circuit and record a single-lead ECG, typically used to check for signs of irregular heart rhythm such as atrial fibrillation. That fits Google’s existing Fitbit approach. Devices like the Charge 6 already offer ECG alongside standard optical sensors for heart rate, sleep, and activity tracking. The Edge’s back sensor layout is also said to resemble the Fitbit Air, suggesting routine health tracking from rear sensors, while the side strips would handle more specialized spot-check measurements. What is not supported by the leaks is any broader set of “hidden” functions beyond ECG. There is no credible reporting yet that the side strips add blood pressure monitoring or other advanced diagnostics. So the evidence points to a targeted health upgrade rather than a surprise multi-sensor system. Because Google has not officially announced the Fitbit Edge, ECG support remains unconfirmed. But based on the leaked images and comparison materials, the metal strips most likely exist to enable on-demand heart-rhythm readings.

Exclusive images show Google preparing the Fitbit Edge, a screen-equipped fitness band expected to launch this month as a middle tier between the $99 Fitbit Air and Pixel Watch 5.
7-day battery life, GPS, an altimeter, automatic activity recognition, notifications and limited apps including Google Maps, YouTube Music and Find My Phone position it as a simpler alternative to a full smartwatch.
Three leaked colors — black, green and orange — match Pixel 11 Pro tones, while the hardware appears to use a different sensor array and band-swapping mechanism from the Pixel Watch line.
The Edge appears set to succeed the dormant Fitbit Charge family, last updated in 2023, with expected pricing around $149 to $199 and support for both Android and iOS.
